Thanks to The Daily Item for acknowledging Contrast's 10th year providing communication services to Pennsylvania businesses:

MIFFLINBURG – More than 100 years ago, skeptics dismissed the invention of the telephone as a toy and impractical toward business, but now a person can’t leave home without a phone.

Contrast Communications, which debuted a decade ago just after the introduction of Apple’s iPhone, is a regional provider of communication and IT solutions and services to businesses, government agencies, hospitals and non-profit organizations in 10 counties, including Snyder, Union, Northumberland and Montour. Contrast is located at 418 Chestnut St. in Mifflinburg.

“When the telephone was first introduced 100 years ago, most prominent business leaders didn’t understand why you would need a telephone in places of business,” said John Uehling, CEO and founder of the company. “It’s quite ironic, because 100 years later, when iPhones were introduced, most businesses are not considered business ready without phones. You can’t imagine an employee at a desk without a phone.”

Authorized to be a partner with Mitel Phone Systems, the core of Contrast business is telephone with IT capability as well. They specialize in desk phones and integrating it with mobile phones. Voicemail can be delivered straight from the device to email inbox, and phone calls to the office phone can be paired straight to a cell phone, he said.

Contrast provides custom on premise and cloud-based solutions, managed services and live, 24/7 customer support for voice and unified communications systems, contact centers, HD video conferencing, infrastructure, networking, and storage and backup, he said.

“It’s really about helping our businesses, our customers, improve the experience with their customers,” Uehling said.

Customers expect and demand a quicker, shorter response, he said.

“The future is highly dependent on access to the internet,” Uehling said.

Michael Smith, a technician, said he can remotely access the phone systems of the company’s customers. He deals with customers when there are issues with the phone system.

Communications in today’s society is important because people interact more, they want to get to know each other and they need to conduct business, Smith said.

The success of the business over the last 10 years is attributed to a strong, diverse staff who care, Uehling said. The business has at least 500 customers and 10 employees between the Mifflinburg office and Kingston (Luzerne County).
